Chuck Tompkins was an Independent Insurance Agent in North Dakota for over 40 years and founded Western Agency, Inc., which currently has offices in 12 cities and three states. He is a past president of the North Dakota Professional Insurance Agents (PIA), a past North Dakota Agent of the Year, and has been nominated for National PIA Agent of the Year. Tompkins also is a Commercial, Instrument Rated pilot with over 2000 hours flight time and is single-pilot rated in Cessna Citation 500 Series jet aircraft. His last airplane was a Cessna Citation II.

His first book, The Insurance Wars is, a story about how he grew Western Agency, Inc. from nothing to a grade-one agency that insures over 1000 farms and ranches in the upper Midwest. The book is essentially an entrepreneurs handbook on how to bootstrap a business. It is a good read for anyone who is or is thinking of becoming self employed, and Tompkins wrote the book to help people avoid many of the mistakes he made as he grew his company.

His second book, Dakota to DaKine, couldn’t be more different. It is a compilation of short stories and poetry about people, places and things from the upper Midwest area, where he was born and raised. The selection ranges from the cowboy poetry of Father of the Bride, about his daughter getting married, to the breathtaking story of a ranch wife saving a neighbor from certain death in Rancher Down.

Tompkins did another total turn around in his third book, Minot Down Under. This is a largely pictoral book of unforgetable aerial photos Chuck and his brother Casey took from their plane during the tragic and unprecedented Souris River flood of Spring 2011. The photos portray the flood’s frightening advance as it engulfs the cities of Minot and Burlington and totally devastates the north central North Dakota Souris River Valley.

Chuck's fourth and latest book, The Insurance Wars II, continues the story of Western Agency, Inc. It is primarily about that time between age 50 and 65 when Chuck and his wife, Linda, faced new challenges, prepared to pass on the business, and had to decide when, how, and where they going to retire. This book is about how they, and many of their friends, made that transition.

All four books are riveting stories about real events, real people, and life on the Great Plains and elsewhere.

Chuck Tompkins - Entrepreneur, Photographer,

Pilot, and Poet

What People Are Saying about Chuck Tompkins.

"I have known Chuck for many years and have worked with him on the creation and marketing of his four books: The Insurance Wars, Dakotoa to Dakine, Minot Down Under, and The Insurance Wars II. Self described as an entrepreneur, photograper, pilot, and poet; he is certainly all of those. But in my experience, he is far more than just a man of many talents. I have found him to be always amicable, genuinely kind, incredibly generous and honest to a fault. I am honored to consider him a friend.”
